Foreign Affairs - A Heavyweight Business

North Thanet/ Herne Bay MP, Sir Roger Gale, has this week met with the Mayor of Kiev, heavyweight boxing champion Vitaly Klitschko, at the House of Commons to discuss the Russian threat to Ukraine.

The meeting was held in advance of a Commons debate on the UK relationship with the Ukraine during which Sir Roger called upon the Government and the European Union to help to support Ukraine, and its people, through what was going to be a long, hard winter.

Sir Roger has said:

"We face a very dangerous situation in Ukraine with the real possibility that a neo-Soviet Union is emerging. It is likely that the Russians will try to seize more territory in the east and to drive a land bridge via Mariupol through to Crimea.

In the meantime Putin is doing his best to destabilize the new government and parliament whose elections I observed recently. Part of that process is the use of the winter, and potential fuel shortages and we need to wake up to the fact that there is a European Country right on our doorstep that needs more help from Europe and from the UK. We are sleepwalking into the emergence of a new Soviet superstate and if we do not act now we shall live to regret it later"
